Annamalai Swami

9

Annamalai Swami was a direct disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi, the great sage of Arunachala. Swami lived and served in Ramanasramam from 1928-1938, under the constant loving guidance of Bhagavan. After spending years in contemplative meditation, spiritual seekers started to visit and question Swami about his Guru’s teachings and their own spiritual practises. Visitors were often impressed by both the quality of Swami’s pointings and the aura of peace and authority that emanated from him.

This book presents conversations that took place in the last 6 months of Swami’s life detailing his own experiences, practises and the methods prescribed to him by his Guru.

The clear and simple teachings offered in this book represent the essence of Annamalai Swami’s experience and life long devotion to his Guru and his teachings of self-inquiry.

Description

Annamalai Swami: Enquire ‘Who am I?’ or ‘What is my real name?’ The nature of the Self is nothing but peace. If you are not aware of that peace, it means that you are identifying with something that is not the Self. As long as you hear, taste and smell things, you identify with the body. When the perception and the perceiver of them vanish, you become aware of the peace that is there all the time.

Question: I hear the sound. Then I ask myself who is hearing the sound, the answer is ‘I’. What happens next depends on where I am. If I am in Swami’s presence or in the meditation hall at Sri Ramanashram, I feel the presence of the Self and the bliss of peace, but when I am away from Swami, it is not so easy.

Annamalai Swami:  You need not hold on to That because you are That all the time. That is enough. You are That. How can you hold on to That, or feel separate from it, or try to get it back, or lose it? If That is your real nature, how can you pretend that you are nearer to it in two places and separate from it when you are somewhere else?”
